LANSING, MI (WTVB) – There have been a lot of rumors circulating in recent days that have been driven by social media and word of mouth concerning the COVID-19 outbreak.
It’s frustrating officials as they try to get information out to the public while just about everything is shut down and people are told to practice social distancing.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called out the rumor mongers during a Friday press conference in Lansing after her request to President Trump for federal funds to help the Michigan National Guard distribute food and supplies turned into a rumor she was going to declare Martial Law.
“I am not calling for Martial Law. That is a rumor and that is false”. She added it was dangerous for people to foment fear and put out bad information.
Calhoun County Health Officer Eric Pessell said in a Friday video posting that citizens should only use accepted web sites or web sites that have factual information. Their web site www.calhouncountymi.gov provides the latest COVID-19 information.
The State of Michigan also has a coronavirus hotline at 1-888-535-6136 that provides information between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily.
