HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Federal, state and county officials have noted that emergency responders, public safety workers and those at grocery stores are at risk for the coronavirus because they deal so much with the public.
There’s another group serving the public you might not think about: Garbage collection workers.
This week, customers of Republic Services, which has contracts with many Michigan municipalities, sent a cheery automated voice message to customer, asking them to put all trash bags inside containers — including the recycling bags — so drivers do not have to touch any bags, and can use truck mechanisms to empty garbage containers.
The goal is to keep everything inside containers, so driver do not have to pick up anything with their hands.
COVID-19 is easiily transmitted and can last for days on a variety of surfaces.
