UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) –The Better Business Bureau is urging social media users to think twice before they participate in a new trend on Facebook.
Many are posting pictures and details of their graduation from high school, in a show of support for all the current seniors who may not be able to enjoy ceremonies this year because of school shutdowns.
But Troy Baker with the BBB says doing this could give scammers the information they need to answer personal security questions and hack into more accounts.
This isn’t the only Facebook trend users should be wary of. According to the BBB’s website, “Other recent viral personal list posts include all the cars you’ve owned (including makes/model years), favorite athletes, and top 10 favorite television shows,” which are all similar to some of the questions that are asked to get into online bank accounts and other personal websites.
Baker adds that once something is posted online, even deleting it doesn’t ensure someone won’t see it.
BBB has released the following tips to keep people safe on social media:
- Resist the temptation to play along. While it’s fun to see other’s posts, if you are uncomfortable participating, it is best to not do it.
- Review your security settings. Check your security settings on all social media platforms to see what you are sharing and with whom you are sharing.
- Change security questions/settings. If you are nervous about something you shared possibly opening you up to fraud, review and change your security settings for banking and other websites.
