SOUTH HAVEN., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Tom Renner said it best … again.
On Saturday, the retired Hope College publicist, who now is a free lance reporter/photographer in his hometown of South Haven, opened a press announcement for the South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) with this line: “Calls for service to SHAES come in many forms. Saturday’s was a bit unusual.” This was in regards to an officer going into an open manhole north of town and safely pulling out a fawn that had fallen in.
Four days later, SHAES responders were dispatched to behind the Nichols Hotel on a report that six ducklings had been trapped, on top of each other, deep inside a fence post hole shaped in the form of a block capital I. Using tweezers, the officers lifted the young birds out, with five of the six uninjured. No word on the fate of the sixth, and the mother duck was apparently nearby, looking to be reunited with her ducklings.
Renner said in reporting on the Wednesday incident, “SHAES responders are becoming quite adept at animal rescues” in titling his email, “Today’s Good News from South Haven Area Emergency Services.”
