LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive order that extends the suspension of evictions in Michigan to July 15, 2020, and also creates a program that will assist renters in getting help.
The Eviction Diversion Program will provide renters with a process to get rapid rent assistance or to help them create a manageable payment plan.
In addition, $50 million will be available in lump sum payments to help landlords, and in turn allow tenants to remain in their homes.
In a written statement Governor Whitmer said, “No Michigander should have to worry about losing their home during a global health pandemic and, at the same time, landlords and management companies need rent from their tenants to sustain their businesses. This innovative new program will save lives, save money, and save businesses by keeping families in their homes and providing immediate financial relief to landlords for back rent they’re due.”
