KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo has seen a number of rallies, marches and demonstrations since the death of George Floyd over six weeks ago, but the biggest event may be this weekend.
Kalamazoo City Commissioner Eric Cunningham announced during their commission meeting Monday evening that they are planning a major rally and march that will begin in Bronson Park on Saturday. “We shall be receiving some national attention,” Cunningham explained.
The “Let Our Voice Be Heard” march and rally will be led by Stephen Jackson, former NBA player and close friend of Floyd’s, as well as “Poboy,” Floyd’s childhood friend.
The description of the event on Facebook states, “These killings have to stop we have lost too many and it’s time for a change, but we will not accomplish that goal if we do not speak up.”
Cunningham adds that the main goal of the event is to make a unified demand for change, “It’s a really a good opportunity to show what our city, what Southwest Michigan, what Michigan, just show what we’re about.”
According to organizers, there will also be some surprise guest speakers, performances and individuals from the community throughout the event.
The rally is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Saturday in Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo. More information can be found here.
