KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — There have been a number of rallies in Kalamazoo since the death of George Floyd, but the one held this weekend was something special as members of the Black Lives Matter movement continue to press for change, and to keep the momentum going.
Two of Floyd’s close friends were in Kalamazoo and spoke at the “Let Our Voice Be Heard” Saturday afternoon demonstration in Bronson Park.
Stephen Jackson, who played 14-seasons in the NBA, says it’s all about making a change in policy and laws so that they enforce equitable treatment for everyone. He says now is the time for change.
“I am willing to die for change, I put my life behind this for every soul out there,” Jackson said during the event.
Milton “Po Boy” Carney, a childhood friend of Floyd, says one way to make change is through the vote, but it will take more than that.
He says Floyd would love the crowds they have been speaking to across the nation and be right behind the changes they are not asking for, but demanding.
A group of middle school students from Kalamazoo and several other local speakers and politicians were also invited on stage to address the large crowd gathered in the park.
They then marched peacefully around the downtown, maintaining social distancing while they walked.
