SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — The search for a man missing in Lake Michigan off South Haven’s North Beach, started just after 9:15 p.m. Sunday resumed early Monday morning.
South Haven Area Emergency Services were dispatched Sunday night on the report of a man in distress in the water.
A friend who was with the man reported him missing. The incident happened near the mid-point of the North Beach.
The area was experiencing dangerous rip current at the time. Red flags were flying at the beach with waves approximately reaching five-to-six feet.
SHAES and South Haven Police searched the water from the shoreline and used a SHAES drone. A search by water was not possible because of the rough wave conditions.
A Coast Guard helicopter and the Van Buren Sheriff’s marine and dive teams also responded.
Approximately 15 minutes prior to this incident a different man was swept off the North Pier into the Black River channel.
He was thrown a life ring by a good Samaritan from the South Pier and brought to safety before emergency personnel arrived. He did not require medical attention.
