LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is strengthening Michigan’s mask mandate. An executive order signed by Whitmer Friday says businesses cannot just assume a customer isn’t wearing a face covering due to a medical issue, but that they can accept a “verbal representation to that effect.”
The new order also requires public safety officers to wear a mask unless it would seriously interfere with their job functions, and strongly encourages the use of face coverings at polling places during elections.
Right now, citizens are required to wear face masks in enclosed public spaces and outdoor areas where social distancing cannot be maintained, and businesses are required to refuse service to anyone not wearing a mask if they do not qualify for an exemption under the mandate.
