WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – Will Detroit be among the cities with Democratic Party mayors that will see federal “agents” sent in by Republican Party President Donald Trump to quell perceived “tensions” stemming from the Memorial Day death of George Floyd?
Violence in Portland has apparently been escalated by the deployment of government forces in that Oregon city, and the mayor of Chicago has flatly told the White House to not send agents to the Windy City. Governor Whitmer and Attorney General Nessel issued a joint statement on Monday saying that the state of Michigan would not welcome such federal agents into Detroit, and Republican Congressman Fred Upton of St. Joseph doesn’t think that it will happen.
“You got to have a request, you got to have a partnership, you have to have cooperation for any decent law enforcement operation to happen,” he said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly interview on Tuesday. “I don’t think we have that in Detroit, and I don’t expect that to happen.”
Both Whitmer and Nessel believe that the President’s threat of sending in “agents” is politically motivated, as they stated that any protests stemming from Floyd’s death in and around Detroit have been peaceful thus far.
