KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two of the three workers charged in the death of a teen resident at Lakeside Academy in Kalamazoo began their court proceedings Tuesday, according to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office.
They are being charged for their part in the restraint and eventual death of 16-year-old Cornelius Fredericks at Lakeside Academy.
On April 29th Fredericks reportedly food in the cafeteria of the facility, located off of Oakland Drive, and was restrained for about 12 minutes by several staff members. Two days later, Fredericks died of cardiac arrest and the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s office ruled the cause of his death was a homicide.
The cases of these two workers are listed as follows:
- People v. Zachary Raul Solis, File 201011 FY
- People v. Heather Newton McLogan, File 201012 FY
Tuesday, Probable Cause Conferences were held in the cases before the Hon. Anne Blatchford in the 8th District Court.
A Probable Cause Conference allows the parties to discuss a case and inform the Court whether a Preliminary Examination will be requested. A Preliminary Examination is an evidentiary hearing held to determine whether there is probable cause to believe that a crime was committed and that the defendant committed it.
In the case of People v. Solis, the parties have requested a Preliminary Examination be conducted. This hearing will take place on August 18, 2020, before Judge Blatchford in Courtroom K of the 8th District Court. The hearing will begin at 1:30 p.m.
In the case of People v. McLogan, the parties have also requested a Preliminary Exam be conducted. This hearing will take place on August 27, 2020, before Judge Blatchford in Courtroom K of the 8th District Court. The hearing will begin at 1:30 p.m.
Following a Probable Cause Conference for the third suspect Wednesday, 47-year-old Michael Mosley is now scheduled for a Preliminary Examination on October 21, 2020. It will take place at 1:30 p.m. on that date.
