PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Portage Central High School has announced that it will suspend some of its summer programs after one of its students tested positive for COVID-19.
In a Twitter post Monday, Principal Eric Alburtus explained the decision, which is meant to help separate students from further exposure.
“Most recently the student was at a work-out session on Wednesday, July 22 and at that time did not exhibit symptoms of the COVID-19 virus,” Alburtus said. “The student has also attended other athletics and activities sessions, and at none of these did the student show symptoms.”
Alburtus adds that the student and her family are now taking proper measures to ensure their own health and safety.
Because of this development, summer athletic work-outs and band practices will be suspended for the next two weeks beginning Tuesday, July 28.
“Our goal is to create some separation among our students so that the virus has less chance to spread, so that we can keep our kids safe,” Alburtus said. “Our first priority has always been our students’ safety; that is even more important in these difficult days.”
Officials are hoping the programs will be able to resume after the suspension period is up.
Any parents with children who participated in these programs are asked to inform their coach or adviser if they are going to receive a COVID-19 test. Information will then be relayed to the Kalamazoo County Health Department.
