HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A 33-year-old Grand Rapids woman allegedly caused several crashes on Interstate 96 in Marne yesterday and is now in critical condition at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Wildfong.
The at-fault driver –whose name is being withheld at this time — allegedly hit a minivan head-on, then a second vehicle, before continuing on westbound in I-96’s eastbound lanes. As deputies were dealing with the first two crashes, a third happened on the opposite side of the highway, Wildfong said. Michigan State Police trooper, who had been assisting deputies, handled the third crash, Wildfong said.
The third wreck flipped a vehicle.
The investigation closed I-96 in both directions for nearly an hour. Holland resident Karena Groenendyk went to Spectrum with non-life-threatening injuries; two children in her vehicle had scrapes and bruises and a third driver, Jodi Stamm of Marne was not injured. Everyone had been wearing seatbelts, Wildfong said.
Walker police assisted at the scene, as did Life Ambulance.
