LANSING (WKZO AM/FMM) — The Michigan State Legislature held their opening session yesterday, and unity and cooperation were the themes of the day.
Members were sworn in, opening speeches were delivered and family and friends were invited to participate.
Republican Speaker Lee Chatfield invited newly elected Attorney General Dana Nessel to the floor to announce their first bill will reform the state’s civil asset seizure laws to require a criminal conviction before property is taken. They will work together to get it passed.
The legislation is something that they already agree on, unlike no-fault reform or how to fund roads. Those are topics for another day.
Gretchen Whitmer’s pledge to fix the darn roads helped her get elected Governor and most of the legislative leadership says it’s a top issue, but there appears to be a lot of disagreement over how to fund it.
Governor Whitmer pitched user fees on the campaign trail, but most Republicans and their leadership say that is a non-starter.
Whitmer says this is going to take a little patience and some time.
Things won’t really get busy until after Governor Whitmer delivers her first State of the State address in early February and presents her proposed budget.
