EMMETT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A semi-truck driver is dead after a fiery crash on I-94 in Calhoun County.
It occurred around 1:00 a.m. Thursday on westbound I-94 near 11 Mile Road by Firekeeper’s Casino in Emmett Township.
Calhoun County Sheriff deputies say a semi was merging onto the freeway when it was rear-ended by another, igniting the solvents, paint and epoxy one semi was transporting.
The at-fault driver, 48-year-old Peter Monroe from Mendon, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a truck driver for Greenwood Motor Lines in Ohio.
The other driver, 40-year-old Rashad Dobbins from Belleville, was not injured. He works for Rocket Transportation in Dearborn.
The crash remains under investigation, and authorities believe speed may have been a factor.
The cleanup closed the westbound lanes of I-94 for about seven hours Thursday morning.
