KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Winter Weather Warning is now in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday for Van Buren and Kalamazoo Counties and other lakeshore counties to the north because forecasters say we will get with lake effect after today’s snow storm blows by.
Most area schools have closed, and it may not be the first day this week that they remain closed, with record cold temperatures possibly sticking around all day Wednesday and into Thursday.
Richard Bann at the National Weather Prediction Center says we will have one more challenge tonight before the temperatures nosedive, and it’s the reason Kalamazoo is now part of the weather warning. Blowing and drifting along with the Lake Effect.
In Sturgis and in a few other communities where it’s illegal to park on the streets during heavy snowfalls, motorists could find your car has been ticketed or towed away. Sturgis declared a snow emergency overnight. Different towns have similar rules.
The Kalamazoo Gospel Mission will be adding staff and going to a 24-hour schedule to provide a warming center for anyone who is homeless and needs a place to stay and meals.
The First Congregational Church and The First Baptist Church will also be open to provide shelter for anyone who needs it from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. through the end of the week. They are asking for volunteers, donations of food and warm clothing.
If you plan to fly out of Kalamazoo or Grand Rapids today, you may want to check to make sure your flight, or your connecting flight hasn’t been cancelled. This storm system is impacting airports from Minneapolis to Chicago, Detroit and points east. It could save you a trip to the airport, or worse, getting stranded in a distant city.
