KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Officials have been preparing Michiganders all week for this bitter cold, but now it’s time to focus on your four-legged friends.
Aaron Winters with the Kalamazoo Humane Society says adequate food, water, and shelter are crucial for pets, especially when these temperatures can be cold enough to kill.
He says the best bet is to simply keep them indoors, take them outside only when the need to “do their business,” and then immediate bring them back to a warmer area.
If the animal is an outdoor animal, make sure they have proper shelter and bedding, preferably off of the cold ground and out of the wind.
Anyone who believes an animal is being neglected in the cold should contact local authorities immediately.
More information on how to keep your furry friends warm can be found on the Kalamazoo Humane Society’s website.
