WASHINGTON — The FBI is in the spotlight for the bungled investigation of convicted sex offender Larry Nassar. The former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics team doctor is serving prison time for child pornography and will serve decades for abusing hundreds of young female athletes over many years.
During a Senate hearing on Wednesday, FBI Director Chris Wray said investigative failures should not have happened and vowed that such practices will never happen again under his watch. Wray said investigators engaged in “reprehensible conduct” that was not representative of the work of the entire FBI, calling it “utterly jarring.”
Of the two FBI agents who handled the original investigation into the athlete’s abuse claims one has since retired and another has been fired.
