ALLEGAN COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — An Allegan County dive team member and a Martin firefighter rescued a 68-year-old Plainwell woman after a single-vehicle rollover crash that ended Gun River.
The crash happened just before 10 p.m. Thursday, March, 7, 2019, according to Allegan Sheriff’s Lt. Brett Ensfield, in an email to media.
Deputies, a Michigan State Police trooper, and Martin firefighters dispatched to the scene found a vehicle submerged in the Gun River near Second Street, just south of 116th Avenue in Martin Township, he said.
They found an SUV almost completely submerged in the river, and the woman struggling to stay afloat as the current pulled at her.
When she couldn’t be rescued with thrown ropes, an Allegan County Dive team member and a Martin firefighter went into the rive to rescue her.
The 68-year-old woman from the Plainwell area, whose name is not being released at this time, was take to a Kalamazoo-area hospital, where she is listed in serious-but-stable condition.
Police indicated alcohol may be a factor in the crash, which remains under the investigation.
