UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — Gas prices spiked nationwide yesterday, going higher in the upper Midwest states than most, and for a combination of reasons.
Gasbuddy.com’s Patrick Dehaan tells us crude prices are up, refineries are doing spring maintenance and the turmoil in Venezuela, but the main reason is the end of the supply for relatively cheap winter blends.
Summer blends that reduce pollution require more expensive additives.
He says prices could continue to slowly climb through the next two months, and could hit the $3.00 mark.
The average price in west Michigan is about $2.83/gallon of self-serve regular.
Nationally the average is $2.58/gallon, costing Americans about $135-million more per day than at the start of the year.
