LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A state lawmaker has proposed lowering the threshold for drunk driving in Michigan, and the measure is gaining support.
Representative Abdullah Hammoud of Dearborn introduced the package of bills in Lansing earlier this week that would change the limit from its current .08 to .05.
If passed, the state would have the lowest drunk driving limit, along with Utah. Utah’s 0.05 threshold took effect in December 2018.
Hammoud says more must be done to prevent “a completely avoidable epidemic.” He points to how five Michigan family members were killed in January when a suspected drunken driver headed the wrong way on I-75 in Kentucky.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving is supporting the House bill that was proposed by Democrats Thursday.
MAAD President Helen Witty says critical driving skills are impaired at a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.05.
