PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — A police involved shooting in Pennfield Township in March has been ruled a justifiable homicide by Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert.
He says 46-year-old Joel Kellay was drunk when he shot a hand gun at his wife and missed as she ran next door to call 911. Soon after, Kellay wounded his two sons.
One of them still managed to disarm the man. By the time Battle Creek officers and County Deputies arrived Kellay had barricaded himself in an upstairs bedroom.
They forced their way through a locked door and by flashlight only, saw Kellay holding a shotgun. They opened fire just as Kellay pulled the trigger on the shotgun, killing himself.
