LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The road to snow day forgiveness in the state legislature has taken a twist. The State Senate unanimously approved allowing school districts to erase up to four more days from the number they would have to make-up.
But Democrats were unhappy that the Senate rejected an amendment that provided funding for hourly workers who lost income, so they defeated a vote to give it immediate effect. That means it would not help districts this year.
Kalamazoo State Senator Sean McCann says the Senate bill will now go to the House which could pass it or modify it and return it for another spin through the Senate, and another shot at getting immediate effect.
Senate Leader Mike Shirkey is calling it a dead issue.
It’s the first time that Democrats have used the tactic to derail a bill, possible now because they increased their numbers this session. But it won’t make them popular if the school year goes into overtime because of it.
