OTTAWA COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — Buckle up, folks. the 2019 Click it or Ticket campaign is set for May 20-June 2, 2019, accoding to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike VanDenBosch
That’s when police will be looking especially hard for unbuckled motorists and passengers, as part of the annual campaign.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s officials want to remind drivers of the importance of seat belt use now, and that the extra enforcement runs from May 20 to June 2, 2019.
This is a national seat belt campaign intended to save lives during the busy summer travel season. The Click It or Ticket campaign is a zero-tolerance approach to seatbelt use. According to NHTSA figures, 10,076 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants died in crashes across the U.S. in 2017.
Almost twice as many men were killed, compared to women, during 2017, with more than half (51 percent) unrestrained while 39 percent of females were not buckled up. More than half of the young adults (18 to 34) killed in crashes in 2017, we unbuckled — the highest percentage of all age groups.
Drivers ticketed for not wearing seatbelts pay a $65 fine — and, while they won’t get points on their driving record, Vandenbosch noted that more than one ticket for not using a seatbelt amounts to “a very expensive hobby.”
