LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s called the “Ballot Selfies” suit and while Portage resident Joel Crookston has settled his legal challenge of the state’s law banning selfies at the ballot box, there will still be serious restrictions on the use of cameras at polling places. Taking a selfie at a polling place will still be banned.
Secretary of State Spokesman Shawn Starkey says voters will be limited to taking a photo of their ballot, and nothing else.
They are also banned from sending the photo of the ballot anywhere until they get at least 100 feet from the polling place.
The settlement was reached last month, but Attorney General Dana Nessel delayed release of the details until after Tuesday’s election. That will buy them time to publicize the changes.
Attorney General Dana Nessel was very busy yesterday.
She announced that a couple who ran three illegal casinos in Muskegon had been successfully prosecuted and could face up to ten years in prison. The gambling operations were grossing nearly a million dollars a year, but the couple wrote off the revenue and paid little in taxes.
Nessel also signed on with a bipartisan coalition of 38-states calling on Congress to amend the banking laws to allow legal marijuana firms to use the federal banking system. Currently they are banned because marijuana is still classified as an illegal drug by the feds.
She also signed a letter co-signed by 42 other states urging the Federal Communications Commission to combat illegal and malicious Robo-calls, many of which are scams.
