KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County’s Health Director says there are options for parents with children who can’t wear masks all day at school. Jim Rutherford says waivers are available if children complain of health problems caused by masks, but only if they obtain the signature of a doctor verifying the problem.
“An affliction that prevents them from either emotionally or physically being able to wear a mask. But that would be determined by their pediatrician.”
He says they are currently working with State Health Dept. Lawyers and the Attorney General’s office to look into the activities of two doctors who may be abusing the waiver system.
He says there are also provisions in the law that would exempt special needs children with designed learning plans in speech therapy and other classes that require full facial expression.
