MACKINAC ISLAND, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s official. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed Michigan’s no-fault auto insurance reforms into law.
Both the House and the Senate overwhelmingly approved the legislation last Friday that will give drivers options for personal injury protection coverage, including the existing unlimited lifetime coverage currently mandated by law.
During the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Mackinac Policy Conference on Thursday morning, Whitmer signed the sweeping auto insurance bill after calling the vote “truly historic” earlier this week.
However, Michiganders shouldn’t get too excited just yet.
Representative Jon Hoadley said one important factor of the new agreement is that it will not go into effect until July 2020. During an interview, he urged drivers to begin discussing new coverage plans with their insurance providers as soon as possible.
In a writen statement, Senator Aric Nesbitt of Lawton said:
“This bipartisan effort will end the outdated system that has burdened Michigan drivers for decades. Families, seniors and all drivers will finally be able to choose their auto insurance coverage after nearly 50 years. The new law will also stop the massive overcharging for care involving auto accidents and crack down on fraud and lawsuit abuse. I applaud the governor’s action today. Lower rates will benefit drivers from every corner of our great state.”
