BENTON HARBOR, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The school board in Benton Harbor is presenting Governor Whitmer with a third option after being faced with a Friday deadline to make a decision on the future of the high school.
The state is seeking to eliminate millions of dollars in debt in exchange for suspending operations of Benton Harbor High School or risk dissolving the district.
Monday night the board proposed individual plans for each student, implement a pending partnership with Western Michigan University, restore academic programs including the National Honor Society, and increase certified teacher retention.
The board also already passed a balanced budget for next school year, and is working to refinance its debt, saving the district $300,000.
District officials will be meeting with the governor Wednesday.
