GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — A flood advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2019, according to the National Weather Service.
A combination of high water levels, northwest winds gusting up to 40 mph, and waves reaching 5 to 10 feet will lead to lakeshore flooding and beach erosion. Swimming will be dangerous and is not advised — same goes for walking on piers, where waves can sweep a person off quickly..
The highest waves on Thursday will be south of Grand Haven.
There’s a potential for property damage, as water forced into the channels between pier heads may create the risk of flooding in port towns and along river channel edges.
Waves may completely submerge pier decks at times.
Northwest facing areas will be most vulnerable to flooding and beach erosion.
Steer clear of the pier and stay dry when waves are high, the weather service warned, in its announcement.
