LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Whitmer is asking congress for $875 Million to fund a Great Lakes Cleanup project over the next five years.
Whitmer wrote a letter requesting assistance to the House Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment on Monday. Funding would include payouts of $175 Million a year.
In a statement, Whitmer said:
“Our iconic five Great Lakes define Michigan. These bodies of water hold 21 percent of the world’s freshwater, 84 percent of our country’s fresh surface water, and support over one million jobs. Our state government and local communities continue to realize the positive impacts of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative on our economy, our citizens, and our environment; our successes are clear evidence as to why the program should be reauthorized and fully funded.”
Projects that would be funded include a coral reef restoration, as well as cleaning up toxic hotspots in places such as White Lake and Deer Lake.
