KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s going to be a little more expensive for incoming freshmen attending Western Michigan University next school year.
The total for a full-time, in-state, first year will be $13,017 in tuition and fees, not including room and board, which is up by 4.3% from last year.
Specifically that will be about a $534 increase from what they had been paying this past year.
University officials say rising costs are the main reason for the increase but they will also be making more investments in student financial aid, mental health services, and campus security.
They’re also predicting a 4% decline in enrollment compared to last year. That’s about 900 students.
Western trustees approved the tuition hike at their board meeting Wednesday morning on top of their new $423 million budget.
They do plan on cutting about $10 million in spending costs next year, but it’s not clear on where the cuts will come from.
