EMMETT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An investigation is underway after two bodies were recovered from a lake near Battle Creek.
Emmett Township Public Safety officers were first called to Beadle Lake just after 7 a.m. Wednesday for a water rescue which later turned into a recovery mission.
Officials and family members say the couple went kayaking around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and didn’t come home. That’s when family members began looking for the two Wednesday morning.
The female victim was identified as 25-year-old Morgan McKenzie Smith, who lived at a residence on Beadle Lake. The male victim was identified as 32-year-old Timothy John Geibig from Battle Creek.
The victims were found floating in the lake. Officers recovered one of their kayaks but at the time they were still looking for the other one which is bright green.
It did not appear that either of the victims were wearing a life jacket and it’s unknown if alcohol was a factor.
Anyone that may have been on the lake, found the bright green kayak, or has any additional information should contact the Emmett Township Department of Public Safety at 269-968-9303 or Silent Observer.
