HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — For the first time, Michigan law is allowing fireworks for six straight days — and some people are complaining. Park Township Republican Rep. Jim Lilly, who authored the new rules, said he’s seen some complaints, but added there’s good reason behind the changes.
“We’ve given local municipalities significantly more leeway in terms of the amount of legislation they can have around fireworks, with the exception of around the Fourth of July holiday itself, which, in every municipality I talked to, there was always an issue of folks lighting them off outside of the hours where they were allowed before,” he told WHTC. “
Lilly said the new rules also raised the fine and are aimed at helping police with enforcement.
Friday, July 5, 2019, is the last day to light off consumer fireworks — and anyone caught using them outside of 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. can face a $1,000 fine.
This year, most police officers are intending to educate area residents, and only plan on ticketing repeat offenders, for the most part.
