STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – Forensic experts and others are excited about the discovery of human remains in Sturgis this week as they might be those of Revolutionary War veteran David Randall and his family, who were among the first settlers of the area.
Randall and his family walked from Ohio to Sturgis around 1833, and pension records show he died in October 1835.
The bones of at least three adults and two children have been found about six feet underground. The first bones were discovered on Tuesday by construction workers near the area of South Nottawa Street and Bogen Road.
Randall’s descendants live in the Sturgis area and they have used genealogical testing kits to submit DNA in hopes of identifing the remains. Results are expected to take several months.
Anne Davis of the Daughters of the American Revolution says where Randall was buried had been a mystery.
Western Michigan University forensic anthropologist Carolyn Isaac thinks more bones will likely be found in Sturgis.
