HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Three West Michigan Congressmen have have decried a series of tweets by President Donald Trump on Sunday, July 14, 2019, attacking four Congresswomen and telling them to “go back” to other countries: Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who was born in Detroit; Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, who was born in Somalia, but moved to the U.S. and became a citizen as a child; Ayanna Pressley, D-Massachusetts; and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez D-New York.
Here’s what each wrote on Monday:
Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph: “Frankly I’m appalled by the President’s tweets. There’s no excuse. Inflammatory rhetoric from both sides of the aisle that is used to divide us just isn’t right. It’s not helpful. We have too many challenges facing us ..that we ought to be working on together – immigration, the debt ceiling, the border crisis. The President’s tweets were flat out wrong and uncalled for, and I would encourage my colleagues from both parties to stop talking so much and start governing more.”
Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland: “I strongly disagree with what the President said in a series of tweets over the weekend. Every duly elected official needs to lead by example, end the personal character assassination attacks, and focus on finding ways to work together to make America the very best it can be. We are better than this – let’s start showing it.”
Michigan Third District Rep. Justin Amash, who left the Republican Party on July 4, 2019, wrote: “To tell these American citizens (most of whom were born here) to “go back” to the “crime infested places from which they came” is racist and disgusting.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California: “I reject @realDonaldTrump’s xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation. Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values. Stop the raids – #FamiliesBelongTogether!”
