HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — What was expected to be a bi-partisan statement criticizing President Donald Trump’s racist tweet on Sunday passed — but fell well short of a unanimous vote..
Trump used Twitter to tell four non-white Congresswomen to “go back” to other countries, despite four of them having been born in the U.S., including Detroit-born Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and one having gained citizenship as a child.
The language was roundly criticized as racist, having been used for hundreds of years to demean and harass immigrants or people presumed to be immigrants, particularly people who are not white.
Zeeland Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga, who made a statement criticizing Trump’s language on Sunday, voted with his party and against the resolution, then released the following statement:
“America needs less politics and more solutions. In my view, the past six months in the House have been more about scoring political points and performing political theatre than solving problems. I view this resolution as a continuation of that flawed behavior which is why I voted against it. Everyone needs to come to the table and get to work on the issues West Michigan and the nation expect Congress to address.”
