KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM)– A man is being formally charged for the death of a local advocate and former county commissioner candidate.
36-year-old Darien Gilleylen was arraigned Wednesday on open murder and felony weapons charges in connection to the death of 33-year-old Shequita Lewis.
Lewis was the mother of 9 and Gilleylen is the father of two of those children.
Kalamazoo Public Safety officer say Lewis was picking up their child at his home on North Church Street on the city’s Nortside on Monday when she was shot in the chest.
Gilleylen has been denied bond and now faces up up to live in prison if convicted.
He will be back in court next month.
