BERRIEN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A woman accused of plotting to kill her husband, a U.S. Army sergeant, in Berrien County is now facing life in prison.
On Thursday Kemia Hassel was found guilty of premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the shooting death of Sergeant Tyrone Hassel III back on New Year’s Eve.
Sergeant Hassel was home for the holidays and was taking a plate of food from a party to his wife at a home in St. Joseph Township when he was gunned down by Kemia’s lover Jeremy Cuellar.
The prosecutor says the two were having an affair and their motive was to finance that relationship with the Army’s death benefit from her husband’s murder.
Hassel will be sentenced on August 29th and Cuellar’s trial is also set to begin on August 12th.
Hassel will face a minimum sentence of life in prison without the chance for parole for her role in the December murder.
