LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – You may be getting a small break in your next electric bill if you are a customer of Consumers Energy.
The Michigan Public Service Commission on Thursday approved a $33.6 million refund that the Jackson-based utility must pay its ratepayers, which in a statement said would amount to a one-time, $3.20 refund to residential customers using 500 kilowatts a month.
The order comes due to Consumers jumping the gun on a rate increase two years ago before the MPSC approved the hike. The utility had implemented a requested $130 million rate hike; the commission only OK’d $65.8 million.
An energy legislation bill signed into law by then-governor Rick Snyder in 2016 prohibited utilities from implementing energy rates before getting final MPSC approval.
In a related notice, the annual review by the commission as to whether all electric providers in Michigan have adequate supplies to meet the needs of their customers for the 2022-23 planning year came up in the affirmative.
