BENTON HARBOR, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Earlier this month, the Michigan State Police (MSP) announced that it would deploy more troopers to the areas of Benton Harbor and Benton Township in order to help reduce and prevent violent crime.
This decision was made due to an increase in gun violence in early August.
Officials say that, anecdotally, the increased resources appear to have been effective since mobilizing on August 11.
Officials say gun violence and reported shootings have slowed down considerably, and on several days, there were no reports of violent or significant activity.
During the month of August, which includes the additional troopers, four firearms were confiscated, resulting in the arrest of three suspects and apprehension of one juvenile.
Methamphetamine, heroin, and crack cocaine was also seized resulting in multiple drug arrests.
On August 8, troopers assisted BHDPS with a homicide investigation at the Sunny Spot gas station, where a male subject was shot by a suspect inside the store.
In summary, arrests were made for the following:
- Three – carrying concealed weapon and other felony violations
- One – juvenile apprehended for carrying concealed weapon
- Two – possession with intent to deliver felony drugs
- One – resisting & obstructing police officer
- Four – felony warrants satisfied, including one for possession of meth, one for stolen property and two for assault
MSP says it will stand by its commitment to maintain its current staffing level, but will continue to evaluate conditions and make adjustments accordingly.
