GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Closing arguments are set to take place Friday morning in the trial of Jared Chance, the Grand Rapids man accused of murdering and dismembering Ashley Young of Oshtemo.
30-year-old Chance faces charges of 2nd degree murder, mutilation of a body, concealing a death, and three counts of tampering with evidence after parts of Young’s body and other gruesome evidence were found in his Grand Rapids apartment late last November.
Testimony got technical on Thursday as Michigan State Police DNA experts explained how Young’s DNA was found in Chance’s apartment and on saw blades.
The jury heard from multiple witnesses during the 3-days of testimony, including Young’s mother, the neighbor that found her body, Chance’s brother, officers who arrived at the scene, forensics experts, among others.
Chance did not testify, but the defense attorney is still arguing that there is zero evidence that he killed Young.
Chance rejected a plea offer earlier this week that would have given him a shot at a shorter sentence in the hopes that he will be found not guilty in the murder and dismemberment case.
Attorneys will give their closing arguments and the jury will start deliberating. If convicted, Chance could spend the rest of his life in prison.
