UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan’s national forests have a sweet deal for holiday tree-seekers who want their holiday tree to come with a bit of outside adventure.
For a $5 “tree tag” permit, you can cut down your own tree from certain parts of Michigan’s federal forest lands. This includes national forests on both peninsulas: the Hiawatha, Huron-Manistee and Ottawa.
You can cut any type of live conifer that is located in an area open for cutting. Tress can’t be taller than 20 feet, and no topping trees; (i.e. no cutting the top 10 feet off of a 30 foot tree), and don’t leave a stump larger than six (6) inches off the ground.
A valid permit MUST be attached to each tree before it is removed from the site at which it is cut and MUST remain on the tree in transit. To get a tag, contact the office at any of the forests.
