GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Whitmer is making a stop in west Michigan Monday to give back to the community.
Her office, Meijer, and Feeding America West Michigan are teaming up to donate more than 2,000 hams to food pantries across the state.
She will speak at Feeding America West Michigan in Comstock Park at 1:45 p.m. Monday December 16t, and then visit Public Thread, a clothing store on Buchanan Avenue in Grand Rapids, around 2:40 p.m. to encourage people to shop locally at small businesses over the holidays.
Last week the governor also wrote a letter to the U.S. Department of State saying that the state of Michigan will continue supporting the resettlement and welcoming of refugees.
This comes after the Trump administration released an Executive Order back in late September requiring all states to give written consent on their decision to resettle refugees.
Those that don’t provide written documentation will not have refugees sent to their state.
In the letter Whitmer wrote, “Michigan has a rich history of welcoming refugees and other immigrants to our state. We recognize the value of being a welcoming state, and the contribution of refugees to the fabric of our communities. I am committed to ensuring that we remain a leader in responding to the needs of globally displaced families and individuals.”
