BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Some Michigan lawmakers are speaking out against President Trump’s remark about a former Detroit Congressman.
During his Merry Christmas rally at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek Wednesday night, Trump explained how he received a call from Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, thanking him for lowering federal flags and giving state honors for the death of her husband John last year.
While recounting the phone call, Trump joked that Dingell might be in heaven, but he might be somewhere worse.
Trump said Dingell is looking down and then said, “Maybe he’s looking up, I don’t know.” Some members in the crowd gasped after the comment.
After the two hour speech, Representative Dingell took to social media saying, “Mr. President, let’s set politics aside. My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service. I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder.”
Even Representative Fred Upton stated, “I’ve always looked up to John Dingell – my good friend and a great Michigan legend. There was no need to ‘dis’ him in a crass political way. Most unfortunate and an apology is due.”
Thousands lined up for the President’s rally, some as early as the morning before. Kellogg Arena reached capacity and from the looks of it, there was not an empty seat in the venue.
