LANSING, MI – (WTVB) – Michigan’s prison population has dropped for a fifth straight year.
Just over 38,000 inmates are now lodged in Michigan’s prison which is the lowest population since the mid-1990s.
The Michigan Department of Corrections says most prisoners are not finding their way back inside after they serve their time.
The DOC says the recidivism rate is at 29-point-one percent which is one of the lowest in the country.
In addition, parole violations and parolees with new convictions are both down more than 20-percent in the last five years.
Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater is a level two facility that can house up to 1,466 adult male inmates.
