KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo man who was set to be sentenced Monday in the death of his stepson failed to appear in court and now has a bench warrant out for his arrest, according to an update from WOOD TV Monday.
Previously, 23-year-old Latravion Heard-McMillon had turned himself in to police earlier this year after his stepson, 6-year-old Jaylen Worthington, died December 23 due to complications from trauma.
Worthington was admitted to Bronson Hospital on December 14 with life-threatening injuries, later passing away. Police say the following investigation revealed that his injuries were a result of child abuse.
After his arrest, it was determined there was insufficient evidence to show Heard-McMillon had the intent to murder Worthington.
As a result, charges of open murder and first degree child abuse were dropped. Heard-McMillon was then set to face lesser charges. He was going to be sentenced for charges of third degree child abuse and manslaughter.
On Monday, WOOD TV reported that Latravion Heard-McMillon failed to appear for his sentencing, which resulted in a bench warrant being issued. The report also says he was out on a personal recognizance bond.
He had previously pleaded guilty to the charges in June.
