EAST LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The evisceration of Michigan State University in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal continues.
Athletic Director Mark Hollis announced his retirement Friday, a decade after replacing the late Ron Mason, due to the rising crescendo of criticism of MSU’s handling of Dr. Nassar, who was sentenced on Wednesday to up to 175 years in prison for molesting more than 150 girls and young women while working for both the school and USA Gymnastics.
The NCAA has sent a letter of inquiry to the Spartans about the matter, and Hollis said that the school is preparing a comprehensive response.
Hollis’ departure, which will take effect at month’s end Wednesday, follows that of MSU President Lou Anna Simon, with calls continuing for the outster of the entire school board of trustees due to the matter.
The MSU Board of Trustees met Friday and appointed MSU Vice President and board secretary Bill Beekman as acting president to replace Simon, whose resignation was accepted with immediate effect. An interim president from outside of the school will be named shortly while a “comprehensive, national” search for a permanent leader is made.
