LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan Democratic Party wants Dr. Abdul el-Sayed to answer the question whether he is qualified to run for the job, which was exposed by Bridge Magazine in their latest issue.
Dr. El Sayed’s campaign responded by saying they are confident he meets the requirement, because he remained on Michigan’s voter rolls through his stint as a professor at Columbia University in New York. But he was also voted in New York, and some question whether that nullifies his residency status.
El Sayed’s campaign compared it to the “birther” campaign against Barack Obama, but the State Party is urging El-Sayed to immediately ask the courts to clarify the issue, and not wait to be challenged to put the issue to rest.
Chair Brandon Dillon says “a residency challenge could be lengthy, costly, and divert attention away from the important issues affecting Michigan residents”.
