CASSAPOLIS, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police Detective Sergeant Aaron Steensma got an emotional welcome in his hometown of Cassopolis last Sunday after he discharged from the hospital and allowed to go home.
Steensma was shot last month in the line of duty in Branch County’s Union Township.
As he and his wife Lesley arrived in Cassopolis, people lined the streets to welcome him and even flew a large American flag in his honor. Lesley Steensma said it was overwhelming.
Steensma thanked his hometown residents for turning out and taking time out from their Super Bowl parties. He said he and his wife had a good cry.
Steensma suffered a broken collarbone, nerve damage, and a punctured lung when he and Trooper Daniel Thayer were shot at a residence near Francisco and Arbogast Roads January 24, 2018.
They were trying to serve a search warrant connected to the cold case investigation of the 2009 Duane Finney murder. The suspect, David Kidney, was killed in a shootout.
