ST. IGNACE, MI (WTVB) – Big changes are coming to the Annual Labor Day Bridge walk as the Mackinac Bridge Authority tries to manage the growing security and transportation costs of the event.
Security changes dictated by the Deartment of Homeland Security to cut off traffic during the event made it impossible for many to participate last year. Trying to bus everyone back from the St. Ignace side would just be too expensive and so this year, walkers can start from either side, but at some point, they will have to turn around and return to where they began, or make sure they have transportation on the other side when they get there. There will be no busing.
Board member Matt McLogan, who voted for the changes, said that given the rising costs and security needs, options were limited.
The board cancelled seven other smaller hiking, biking and charity events that would have required closing the bridge at yesterday’s meeting.
